Supervised Independent Living Apartments

When the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities (OMRDD) acquired the residential property The Dormitory Authority (DASNY) awarded Ting + Li Architects with the opportunity to provide a LEED certified design as part of a total gut renovation. The existing building, built around 1910, is a five-story walk-up consisting of ten railroad-type apartments. Ting + Li Architects proposed to selectively restore the brownstone exterior yet completely gut and reconstruct the interiors to accommodate 24 supervised individuals. The new interior footprint consists of one apartment suite on each floor on floors two through five. Each suite contains two single bedrooms, two double-bedrooms, two bathrooms, a communal living room and a kitchenette with eating nook. The first floor contains a lobby, administrative / reception / medication area, resident laundry room, library, and common sitting area.  The proposed renovation qualified for Silver LEED Certification.
