Station Circulation for Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH)

As part of PATH’s planned expansion, the Pavonia station is to be a Terminal station offering a transfer to the upcoming NJ Transit Light Rail system.  This expansion is anticipated to drastically increase foot traffic through the station and surrounding areas. Additional connections between the pre-existing concourse and new platform levels will only be feasible by the addition of a new monumental stair and elevator. Upgrades to damaged / outdated finish materials and replacement of the elevator cabs was critical to the design.

Space for the new stair and elevator was generated through additional excavation alongside the exterior station wall. Due to the sub-grade conditions a new water-proof barrier enclosure was required and phased into the project . Within the enclosure, masonry bearing walls and poured concrete support the new spaces. Finishes and forms were selected to match the patterns of the existing station. A new vaulted ceiling above the main staircase matches the appearance and feel of the original station. Flooring and stairs in the new space will be granite to account for the heavy foot traffic planned for the future.
